Côte-Rôtie is a Rhone Valley wine and is one of the smallest major French Appellations for the reds. Located in the Northern Rhône, it produces red wines with the syrah grape and Côte-Rôtie is considered as one of the best syrah reds in France and beyond. The vineyard lies on rocky steep slopes and Côte-Rôtie means “roasted slope” in French.
The Appellation rules also allow for up to 20% of a white variety in the Côte-Rôtie wines: the viognier grape.
The wines are very elegant and refined. The flavors are usually a mix of violet flowers and red fruits, surrounded by peppery, spicy, chocolate and smoky aromas. The wines are medium-body reds, with fine tannins and a long and refreshing final taste.
The wines of Côte-Rôtie age very well and the wines start to show their best potential after usually more than 10 years of ageing.
On the vineyard, the greatest wines are located on steep rocky southern-facing slopes offering a good protection from the strong northern wind: the famous regional mistral.
This Rhone valley wine is very much sought after by connoisseurs among Rhone valley wines. The first prices usually start around 40 euros in France at a wine shop, and can increase very quickly up to a few hundreds euros for one single bottle. The wines produced by the Guigal estate in the Côte-Rôtie vineyard have the best reputation within the Appellation.
Enjoying and pairing a Côte-Rôtie red wine with a smoky meat can be a great experience. Of course, it goes also well with most kinds of meat: porc, beef, and lamb for instance. In the following video, we have interviewed the Chef Ugo Ghion at his parisian restaurant La Table d’Ugo. There, we have found a delicious roasted smoky veal in the menu. This is an amazing food and wine pairing experience with a Côte-Rôtie wine.
We recommend that you check the interview in the video below:
The restaurant La Table d’Ugo is located 3 rue Pershing, in the 17th arrondissement in Paris, near the Porte Maillot. This is a highly recommended spot in Paris!
Now, this is your turn to enjoy a great Côte-Rôtie red! Please let us know when you do the experience, with what we think is the best rhone valley wine.
Looking forward to seeing you soon in Paris.
